Not so good news for Win...

I've been delaying writing about this for a while, since it feels more real written down.  But, as of a few months ago, Winry came up with a random limp, at first in her back legs. We took her to the vet and did comprehensive x-rays to, as always with greyhounds, rule out bone cancer first and foremost.

The x-ray came back clean, and Win went on Rimadyl for a few weeks and her limp went away, though she stayed on mostly bed rest (no real exercise). Unfortunately, during this time, she very suddenly came up with another limp, this time in her shoulder.  She seemed in pain, despite being on the Rimadyl.  Off to the vet we went again for more x-rays of that area, and oddly enough, they again came up clean.  During her examination though, we found a small mass on her leg that we decided to aspirate and send to the lab, just in case.

The results came back and indicate a type of malignant cancer that manifests itself in the joints. Because the source of her pain looks to be deep within the joint in her shoulder, we aren't able to very well identify it.  It is tissue based and not showing up on the x-ray, and would require surgery to thoroughly evaluate it, and even then, the vet said not much else could really be done. It's possible (and likely, since the mass we found was lower on her leg on the opposite side), that the tumors have spread to other locations, so trying to treat it is essentially not possible due to its gelatinous and spread out nature.

Because we can't identify how large existent tumors are or how aggressive they're being (or if she's had this her whole life and it just gradually takes over?), we don't even have a timeline of things.  For now, basically all we can do is manage her pain. Currently, Winry is on the steroid prednisone that has actually been somewhat helpful; she still limps, but she limps faster and doesn't seem as hindered. She gets 15mg once a day in the morning, so unfortunately, mornings before her medication is roughest for her, where she struggles to get up and moving. But, afterwards, seems more or less normal, despite her limps. She loves to eat, she loves to chew bones and over all still seems pretty happy. We're doing all we can to keep her that way.

So far, it looks like we'll enjoy the holidays with her, and hopefully for a good amount of time after that. It will just be a matter of managing her pain, and of course, not letting her existence be more about suffering vs enjoyment.

We love you, Win <3

Happy Birthday 5th Winry!

"Nom nom, bully stick!"
On August 12th, we celebrated Winry's 5th birthday with her. Since we picked them up from the Comfy K9 on Monday morning, both dogs were still pretty tired, so sadly we didn't do much. But she did get three long walks and that bully stick ;-).

Love you, Win. Looking forward to many more years with you <3.

Winry Turns 3!

Things have been exceedingly busy and full of life-changing epiphanies lately, but I couldn't not post about Winry's 3rd birthday yesterday! While we didn't get to do much of anything too special, she was able to do a couple running laps at the dog park, something she'd not been able to do for a while since being on rest for her knee.

I'd like to take this opportunity to give Winry credit where it is due: She is, and continues to be awesome! Super easy pup that can be left without bother, eats anything you put in front of her with no fuss, is always submissive and non-confrontational, gets along great with all other dogs, never complains even when things are tough, is a fantastic snuggler, and otherwise excellent companion to her older brother, even volunteering kisses to him after they've been apart <3. I'm so glad to get to spend hopefully many more years with her. I'm sure her adorableness will never fester!!!

Winry, you are a much loved hound!!!!

Eating Raw Chicken (Winry)

And here's Winry, taken a few minutes after Ferguson. I think she equally enjoyed her treat!

My Dogs In Points

Don't get me wrong, I love both of my dogs. But it is interesting to see their differences, strengths and weaknesses on a day to day basis. I thought I might put them into little categories to tallie and see what they are on paper...er...text format. So, off the top of my head from morning-evening:

Sleeping In:
They both get points for this and are awesome. Something I try very hard to not take for granted is how my dogs will allow me to sleep in as late as I like and are content sleeping until noon if need be.
F: 1 W: 1

Pottying:
While they're both *pretty* good, Ferguson I can trust whole-heartedly to do his thing without me supervising his every move. He also is not affected by things like rain and does his duty without complaint. Winry...the rain is not her friend, and she requires a closer eye.
F: 2 W: 1

Eating:
Winry wins, hands down. She's an angel that will eat anything you put in a bowl in front of her, no matter the time of day! I adore her for this, when compared to Ferguson, who typically sticks his nose up at breakfast or only eats at best 2/3rds of it.
F:2 W: 2

Listening/Obedience:
This is somewhat unfair since Ferguson has a large time advantage on Winry, but I think Ferguson, being more natural in tune with me, will forever have an edge on figuring out what I want, especially since he cares way too much than what might be considered healthy. Winry tends to be more independent, or will shy or run away when confused (but she will come back).
F: 3 W: 2

Problem Solving:
Ferguson, I think, is like me in that we both aren't really into puzzles. He'd rather walk away from an average treat than figure out how to get it if his first few attempts fail. He is also not great at figuring things out for himself. Winry, on the other hand, is decent at using her little brain and can deduce conclusions pretty well. Example: Even after the first few days, she was able to learn by watching Ferguson go lay on a bed that that was what it took for me to put her leash on her and head out the door. Even with another dog, I'm not sure Ferguson would have come to this conclusion as quickly (he's too busy being overly focused on me and pleasing me to think of anything else).
F: 3 W:3

Retrieving:
If that counts as a category. But, in any case, Ferguson does very well and will actually play fetch if he's not in too insane of a mood (or too lazy). Winry I don't think will ever learn, at least on her own. Admittedly, I don't care enough about it to teach her; it's enough for me for her to run and play and have a good time. We'll practice obedience on other things.
F: 4 W: 3

Leash Walking:
I'm pretty sure essentially no dog in the world can compete with Ferguson for his perfect on-leash skills. In respect to Winry, she's pretty good and is better than many of the Labradors I trained, but in new places she gets a little pully and occasionally has to remind herself that she is on a leash. This is especially true of distractions. Ferguson can barely glance at a squirrel and look the other way without much thought. Poor Winry is still heavily interested and has a hard time letting it go. She's improving, but I'm afraid she'll always be second rate when it comes to leash walking (as will pretty much every single other dog in the world!).
F: 5 W:3

Separation:
Ha ha ha ha. Poor Ferguson. While he can manage now, I don't think he'll ever be first in this category.
F:5 W:4

Nail Trimming:
They both get points for this and will lay there while I do it.
F:6 W:5

Dremeling:
Not Winry's favorite thing. She will tolerate it, but is wary and unsure. To Ferguson, it's just another way to get attention.
F: 7 W:5

Ear Cleaning:
For some reason, Ferguson is convinced I am killing him every time we've done this. He cries just when I put the nozzle into his ear, BEFORE anything comes out of it! He's a huge baby. Winry doesn't like it, but she doesn't cry, and will let me do it with little more than a smug face.
F: 7 W:6

Tooth Brushing:
Ferguson LOVES getting his teeth brushed. Winry is a normal dog and thinks it's weird (she'll still tolerate it though).
F:8 W:6

Friendliness:
Winry thinks everyone can be her friend and wants to give everyone the time of day. She wags her tail at every dog and person she meets and is eager to say hi. Ferguson, while not afraid of strangers and doesn't mind soliciting a pet from them here and there, would really be fine if the world blew up, as long as I was still with him. So, I'd say Winry is more of the social butterfly with both dogs and people.
F:8 W:7

Riding in the car:
Poor Winry. She likes the car, but can get carsick. We can't ever let her ride on an empty stomach, and she needs a dose of benedryl before we go anywhere. Ferguson has never gotten carsick and is content to sprawl across the back (probably because I am in the car).
F:9 W:7

So, it seems the numbers are presently in Ferguson's favor...for now. I'm sure more and more categories will come up that I will think of, but it is interesting to see in text how different the pair of them are, even though I love them both :o). Don't worry, Winry. We'll find more things you're good at!

Success, and hopefully more...

Winry: "Who, me?"

The benefit of Winry has become quite apparent now with Ferguson.

Winry: "I like my brother! He has a comfy butt for a pillow!"

Now, after a year of many ups and downs, we are at a point of having a good grasp on Ferguson's separation anxiety. We have learned quite a lot and even learn new things every day about him and how it works. Most recently: a) his anxiety is directed at ME, so other people can leave him and it's no big deal as long as he has Winry (good news for Eric though!) b) he must physically see me leave the house to be satisfied that I am gone. c) a schedule is important...it's not cool when you up and leave off schedule.

But with all these things understood, it makes managing it a lot easier. I go to work every day, and because he expects it, he's able to suck it up and take it. We were even able to go out for dinner the other night with friends and our roommate said he only whined once and then settled (which was pretty darn awesome, since I was expecting the worst!).

Ferguson continues to be on fluoxetine, but because I feel that it is still helping him, I'd like to go a few more months with it, especially when I am potentially going to undergo some transitions in the near future on the job front. Nothing is set in stone, but if things work out the way I hope, Ferguson may need to adjust to a new work schedule. We'll keep our fingers (and paws) crossed and hope things work out. For now though, he is reliably left a few hours every day when Eric goes to class, and doesn't make a peep or do anything except stare when I leave for work every day.

Finally!

Otherwise, besides me working all the time, things have been very good. Winry continues to be awesome and adorable. Everyone she meets loves her, and she seems to love everyone too. Ferguson still likes her too; several times I've caught him corn-cobbing her with his teeth, and she regularly gives him kisses, especially after he gets peanut butter or his teeth brushed. They are quite a pair, and oh so cute. I think we're all better off with Winry around.
