Here in CO there aren't on trails, and many of them, including the one above, are actually fenced. You'll also notice that the one dog is leashed in every photo, simply because she gets too distracted and might not stay on the trail...not because she'd be lost forever.
Thank you for your concern, but please don't be so quick to judge any photos you observe with off leash hounds.

You look very happy together! It seems a bit cold on Mt Evans, and your hounds seems completely comfortable. No ring for the hound?
I bet he was glad he came along on the hike, to be there for that special moment. Congrats!
leash those dogs. its the law for many reasons.
